Panel recommends gas tax boost for roads

Tax experts recommend South Carolina drivers pay 5 cents a gallon more for unleaded gas to generate $150 million more each year for road repair.

“I don’t think anyone would disagree the roads are in pretty bad shape,” said Kenneth Cosgrove, one of 10 Tax Realignment Commission members who voted unanimously Thursday to raise the gas tax.

Currently 16 cents a gallon, the lowest in the Southeast, that tax has not been changed since 1987.

The increase, which would bring the total gas tax up to 21 cents per gallon, is one of several proposals that Tax Realignment Commission members will forward to state lawmakers. The General Assembly, which appointed the tax reform commissioners, must approve any changes, including the gas tax hike, before they become law.

Look like a million while supporting a good cause at Revente’s Last Call

Love to shop for clothes and help others?

You can do both at Revente’s Last Call, a new thrift store at 3015 Millwood Ave.

“For the past 18 years, we have donated thousands of items to charitable organizations or other thrift stores,” said owner Debbie McDaniel, who also owns Revente and Sid and Nancy clothing consignment shops in Five Points. “It finally dawned on me: This is ridiculous. Why don’t we open a store and donate all the proceeds.”

Sales will benefit The Women’s Shelter of Columbia.

Survey: Workers shouldering more insurance costs

An annual survey released Thursday finds that workers are paying, on average, about $482 more for job-based family health insurance this year as companies force employees to shoulder more of the burden of health care costs.

The increase in premiums, up 14 percent from last year, means that workers are paying nearly all of a $495 increase in the average cost of family coverage this year.

Employers’ contributions to family coverage showed no increase at all in 2010, according to the Employer Health Benefits Survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research & Educational Trust.

Over the past five years, workers’ share of premiums has increased by $1,300, or 47 percent, while overall coverage costs are up 27 percent. Over the same period, wages climbed 18 percent and general inflation rose 12 percent. With health coverage costs growing faster than wages and inflation, weary consumers can’t seem to catch a break.
